Reports reveal that his concert at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium drew an ecstatic crowd of 35,000 screaming fans, marking it as a major event by Indian standards. However, on a global scale, this concert appears modest when compared to the world’s largest music events, which have attracted nearly 100 times more attendees.

The World’s Largest Music Festival

Back in December 1994, a spectacular New Year’s Eve bash took place on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro. Known for hosting large-scale events with international stars, the city consistently attracts massive crowds to these free-entry concerts where food and drink flow freely, and a carnival-like atmosphere electrifies the scene. The 1994 celebration was no different as legendary musician Rod Stewart performed before a record-breaking crowd of 3.5 million people, exceeding the population of several nearby cities combined.

Three years later, French musician Jean-Michel Jarre matched this feat in Moscow with a mesmerizing performance of his “Oxygen” album. Both these iconic concerts drew a staggering 3.5 million attendees—around 100 times the crowd at Diljit’s Delhi concert.

The Biggest Ticketed Concerts in the World

While massive free-entry concerts can draw millions, ticketed events generally see smaller but still impressive audiences. The largest ticketed concert to date was by Italian artist Vasco Rossi, who brought in 225,000 fans for his Modena Park show in 2017. In India, the biggest ticketed concerts included Justin Bieber’s 2021 Mumbai show and Diljit Dosanjh’s 2023 performance, each gathering around 50,000 attendees.
